Newton William Lister was born in 1907 in Freckenham (Mildenhall Q2-1907 4A:978), son of John and Frances LISTER (née SPOONER ).

1911 census... Aged 4 he was at High Lodge, Norwich Road, Newmarket, with his father John George LISTER [42] gamekeeper; his mother Frances [42]; sisters Ruth [14] and Lily [6] and brothers Albert [10], Oliver [8] and Percy [1]. All except Percy (born Snailwell) were born in Freckenham.

He married Norma Maisie POOLEY (Newmarket Q4-1930 3B:1261), later of Knodishall, Suffolk.

In the 1939 register, at "Gladovis", Newmarket Road, Moulton, were his father John [21-3-1869] a retired butcher and mother Frances [30-7-1868]. His wife has not been found in the register so far.



On the Army Roll of Honour he is shown as resident in Suffolk
By the 11th November 1942, a few days after the breakthrough at El Alamein, the 8th Army were chasing the retreating Afrika Korps westwards and had reached Benghazi.
There is no telling where Newton was killed.
The RASC lost 68 men that day, only two have identified graves.
